MilSpouse Spotlight: Kasey's Creations

Back in April I wanted to get professional photos done of my little guy dressed up in a NWU just like his dad. I found a cute outfit for him at the Navy Exchange but couldn't find a little cover to complete it.

I searched the internet and found a talented military wife, Kasey, who has an Etsy shop that features her homemade creations. She makes so many adorable products, but my favorite has to be the hats!

She uses authentic uniform fabric and you can even customize the hat. If you check out her Facebook you will notice the many happy customers she has and all of the precious babies wearing her creations. I don't know how they get newborns to pose that way while sleeping. It would have been impossible with my son since he wasn't a deep sleeper. He still isn't. ;)

The hats are also available in larger sizes for older kids. Her products are made in a smoke-free and pet-free environment.

Kasey creates hats for all military branches and a 15% discount is offered on military payday, the 15th of every month.

Which one of her products is your favorite?

Dr. Bronner's Soap Sale

Today I went shopping at Sprouts and found Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps on sale for $2.99!

I ordered a bar from Amazon a few days ago and it was $5.60. I might have to go back to Sprouts and buy a few more because $2.99 is a fantastic deal.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps
Hey, they match my blog theme :)

I haven't tried Dr. Bronner's soaps yet but I've heard they are amazing especially for your little ones. I really hope my son's skin gets better by using Dr. Bronner's soap because there are days where is skin is dry and itchy (not sure if it's eczema or if he just has sensitive skin). He'll scratch himself so hard he bleeds and leaves marks. :(

You can also make homemade laundry detergent using Dr. Bronner's soaps!

Do you use Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps? What are your favorite homemade laundry detergent recipes?

Participate in a Couples Study

Are you and your spouse legally married (or in a civil union) and at least 18 years of age?
Have you or your partner consumed alcoholic beverages in the past 6 months?
Is alcohol use an area of disagreement in your marriage? (e.g. has one of you expressed concern about the other's drinking?)
If you answered yes to the above questions, you and your spouse are eligible to participate in a research survey regarding the relationship between marriage, alcohol use, and alcohol-related help seeking behaviors.
The survey has a section for both partners, and will take each participant approximately 20 minutes. Survey responses will be anonymous.
An opportunity to enter a raffle will be made available to those participants that complete the entire survey. Contact information provided to enter the raffle cannot be connected to your survey responses.

Start Survey Here:

This study has been approved by the Clark Committee for the Rights of Human Participants in Research and Training Programs (IRB). Any questions about human rights issues should be directed to the IRB Chair, Dr. James P. Elliott, 508-793-7152, jelliott@clarku.edu. The study is being conducted by C.J. Fleming, M.A. and James Cordova, Ph.D. in the Psychology Department at Clark University. Please feel free to contact the researcher ( alcoholusesurveyemail@gmail.com ) or the research supervisor ( jcordova@clarku.edu ) with any questions or concerns.

About CJ:

My name is CJ and I am a graduate student working towards my Ph.D. in clinical psychology. I am currently working on my dissertation research, which focuses on a partner's role in a person's decision to seek help for alcohol use issues. I am passionate about understanding the pathways to seeking help for alcohol use problems given that alcohol can be a major risk factor for suicide, domestic violence, and other serious issues with family and employment. I have always been interested in work with couples in both clinical settings and in my research, and so it is my natural inclination to try to understand this issue from a family perspective.

It is particularly important to me to make sure that veterans and military personnel are represented in my study, considering the increasing rates of alcohol use in returning vets and the many ways in which alcohol use can uniquely affect military and veteran relationships.

About the Study:

Broadly, I am interested in knowing if and how a person's partner plays a major role in his/her decision to seek help for alcohol problems. Is it often a person's spouse who convinces him/her to speak to someone about alcohol problems, or are other factors more important? Does a spouse's own drinking behavior or help-seeking behavior play a role in a drinker's decision about his/her own behavior? Considering the important role of the family in our overall mental and physical health, I expect that a person's partner plays a major role in many of his/her decisions, but I hope to understand this phenomena better, to find ways to bridge the gap between those who may need to make a change and the services available to them.

MilSpouses: Looking for a New Career?

military spouseThis past March I decided that I wanted to study something. I knew that going to a community college would be hard for me because I'm a stay-at-home mom. Not only that but I'm a military spouse. I didn't want to worry about having to enroll in different colleges or whether or not my credits would transfer every time we move. I also didn't want a huge school loan following me around.

I did some research and chose to take an online program. I knew that I could find plenty of resources for military spouses pursuing their education.

Signing Up for Career Step

  1. Setting up my account with MyCAA was the first step I took.
    [Top 5 MyCAA Myths]
  2. I searched for portable career options and decided on Medical Administrative Assistant. This career has a bright outlook with a much-faster-than-average employment growth according to the Bureau of  Labor Statistics.
  3. Out of the list of institutions, I picked Career Step because I felt like it was the best option for me. The tuition was 100% covered by the funds provided by MyCAA!
  4. I made the call to Career Step and they helped me complete all the forms on the MyCAA portal.
  5. Once I was approved, I got my registration info for the Career Step website and was able to begin right away. Within a few weeks I received my textbooks and other Career Step goodies.

My Career Step Training

So far I have really enjoyed learning at my own pace. Having a tot running around can make it difficult to get things done sometimes but I'm thankful that I have enough time to complete my course! Great flexibility. I use the textbooks in conjunction with the program online and find it helpful to highlight important areas throughout the units. The textbooks can be used to study when you're away from your computer.

One way I interact with other students is through the Career Step forums. Chat sessions are held weekly depending on which program you're enrolled in. I like to use this resource to ask questions and get help whenever I need it.

After Course Completion - What Happens Next?

Once I've successfully completed my program, a graduate advisor at Career Step will personally help me:
  • Review my resume and cover letter
  • Improve my interview skills
  • Let me know when a company has a position available
On top of that, I'll also have military spouse career resources available to assist me in finding a job. I am very confident that I will! I recommend this online school to military spouses and stay-at-home moms.

If you want to enroll or just want to request information about the programs available at Career Step, you can visit the Career Step website.

Go With Me Chair Giveaway (Ends 6/24)

Many of us have probably seen the child sized, portable, fold up chairs for sale in stores, but have you even seen the Go With Me Chair? Made by Kelsyus, these chairs are suitable for children ages 3 months to 6 years and consist of three main stages: sitting, standing, and big kid.

For the sitting stage there is a 5-point harness included to keep your little wiggle worm secure. If your child is just learning to stand there are leg holes under the seat flap and a foot bag to keep your child’s feet clean and away from hazardous things if used outside.

Last, for the big kid stage, the 5-point harness can be removed and the foot bag rolled up and secured with Velcro tabs. Not only is the Go With Me Chair versatile, it also includes a cup holder, carrying bag with handles, a removable tray for toys and snacks, AND a removable sun shade!

The Go With Me Chair would make a great gift for moms. You can take it along with you for a day at the park, the pool, the beach, and other fun events. How cute are those polka dots?

If you would like to read Getting Green with Baby's full review of the Go With Me Chair, click HERE. If you would like to purchase one for yourself and see what other great products Kelsyus offers, click HERE.

Getting Green with Baby has teamed up with Kelsyus to give one lucky reader a Go With Me Chair of their own! Enter the giveaway below for your chance to win!
